Stranded Pearl

Our media studies class was very lucky to be allowed on the set of a movie called ‘Stranded Pearl’. It was a very interesting experience. The co-directer gave us a few tips on how to ‘cheat’ when filming. He said that it’s all about angles. Depending where you put your camera and how angle it can make a scene look completely different from how you see it with your eye ( if that makes sense?)

Here is an example (not the greatest but I’m getting there)

With the right angles you can make it look like an uninhabited island - which is what they were trying to do. We were asked to help make the hut for the heros. It was fun weaving with my group and the people were friendly. (They gave us biscuits hehe~)

We met the director, the crew and some of the cast and we watched them film a scene. It kinda made me realise how backwards the process is. I mean like the scene that they just filmed was part of the beginning of the movie and I’m sure they’ve already filmed most of movie.

Another thing the co-director showed us was a plan. It was a detailed sketch of the area. He said that he created this so that everyone knows where to go and knows when to be there. I also took a peek at the script, it was interesting and I have a fair idea now of how to create one. The movie is a about a woman who is a CEO (I think? Or some high level worker) she’s so used to the city life. One day she goes on a plane and the plane crashes. She ends up washed up on the beach and meets a man. She learns what it’s like to survive.I wished we could have stayed longer, we could have learnt even more. Overall it was a great experience and I can’t wait to watch the movie!

Brief +Concept (final)

Music video (May change)

~Duration: at least 3 mins long

~Audience: 15-18 (teenagers/young adults)

My inspiration for this music video was the movie The Giver.

~Content: I want my music video to be about expressing yourself/ valuing your relationships with people and how it feels to be connected with these people who mean something to you. In today’s society many of us know how to use an electronic and access the internet. Social media and texting has sort of become our main way of communicating with people. We forget that we miss out on experiencing new things and making connections with people.

The film The Giver is about  a boy who lives in a seemingly perfect world. Jonas was chosen by the elders to become the next Receiver (of memories) for his community. He meets his mentor The Giver, an old man who is the sole keeper of the community’s memories. They don’t feel any emotions like pain or happiness, everything is black and white because they’re all the same and see everything the same. But as Jonas begins his training he marvels at the beauty of their past and wonders why the elders chose not to share this with everyone, the movie also begins to have color making it seem alive and real.He tries to share what he has learn t/experienced with his best friend but he gets in trouble.Jonas then discovers the dangerous truths of his community’s secret past and attempts to escape his world to return memories, emotions and feelings to his people.

For my concept I want my music video to look Dystopian/utopian. It seems perfect but really its not. The filming will be done in black and white. The main character boy/girl will be waking up when their phone glued to their hand. They’re walking around town and someone knocks into the boy/girl. So they drop their phone. They then have to get it repaired and they feel bored not knowing what to do because their phone is what kept them occupied. They decide to go for a walk or a drive. He/she starts to notice things that they didn’t before. Like kids playing sports, a happy couple holding hands looking at each other, someone playing with their dog and a mother and child. As he/she starts to see these things the video starts to develop color. He/she joins in with the kids and is happy. Then we see the stranger that bumped into him/her smiling.

Setting: Most likely at a park(since we don’t really have a park it will be set in different places.) rugby field, playground, somewhere in town, at a beach(possibly). These are places where I think are best for my music video and gives it a comfortable vibe.

This would appeal to my target audience because many teenagers can relate that our phones distract us (hence why some of our parents take it away from us). Almost every teenager i know is on social media and we can spend hours just sitting reading/posting/texting. I also chose this audience because I want to get my message out to them which is, go and experience things before it’s too late.

Equipment: Camera, laptop/computer, Internet-YouTube, space to work- home

Audience

The audience is teenagers (could also be considered young adults). “Teenagers are no more alike than are adults. Teen consumers can be segmented into four attitudinal groups.

Socially driven: They have the highest disposable incomes, are the most brand conscious, and spend heavily on personal grooming and clothing to give them status.

Diversely motivated: They are the most energetic, adventurous, and cultured, and are equally as comfortable in solitary activities as in group ones.

Socio-economically introverted: They like solitary activities and spend money on products and services for use in these pursuits.

Sports oriented: They represent the biggest market for sports and home video equipment.” - www.citeman.com

I have chosen the ages 15-18 because they are mature enough to understand the message in my music video. I feel that my audience falls in the socially driven and socio-economically introverted class. I feel that my audience will connect to my music video because most teenagers know how to operate an electronic device. We spend most of our money on buying the latest tech to look cool and we are absorbed in whatever we look at. i.e facebook, instagram. We are disconnected from the world and we prefer (some not all) solitary confinement.

Concept (Draft)

I want my concept of my music video to look slightly dystopian/Utopian ? In the film The Giver everything is black and white. It’s ‘perfect’ to them because they suffer from no pain, they don’t feel emotions and they have their whole life planned out by the elders. But as Jonas begins his training with the giver he learns the wonders of their past and he sees everything in color. He tries to share what he’s learnt with his friends.  In my music video I want it to be shot in black and white. I think there will be alot of close ups of the characters to show their emotionless faces. Everyone is glued to their phones and the protagonist drops his phone. It breaks and he has to get it repaired. Every electronic he owns malfunctions when he touches it. Thus forcing him to do something to occupy his time. He goes for a walk and sees different things. A kid playing with their dog, a mother taking care of her baby, a man and a woman holding hands. Slowly everything starts to develop color. He then starts to make connections such as spending time with his mother or he makes a new friend.

Brief (DRAFT)

•Create a design, plan and complete media product.

Music video

•Length: At least 3 mins ( not including credits)

•Subject: I will be basing the narrative of my music video on the importance of family and friends. I will base my video on the film  The Giver

•Audience:Teenagers 15-18 years old

~Content: I want my music video to be about how family makes us feel- happy, safe etc. I want teens to see how valuable our relationships with other people is- to make connections. The internet/media has become our main way of communicating, we express ourselves through emoji’s and we allow media to control and take over our lives. I want it to be like everyone is on their phone absorbed in whatever they’re looking at. The protagonist breaks his phone and has to get his phone repaired. Everything starts to malfunction in his home and he is unable to use any electronic.

The film the giver is about a boy who lives in a seemingly perfect world. When Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) graduates from his childhood, he is chosen to be The Receiver (of memories). He meets The Giver (Jeff Bridges), an old man who is the sole keeper of the community’s memories. Jonas discovers the dangerous truths of his community’s secret past and attempts to escape his world.
